Topic: Will #! 10 Alpha 2 be able to seamless update to final release?

I download #! 9.04 last week, and I like it very much.
Some people said 9.04 would end support soon, what does that mean?
Does that mean I can't get new software from Ubuntu official repo?
Is #! 10 currently stable enough for a development desktop?
Would it be able to update to a final release ?
Thanks.

Re: Will #! 10 Alpha 2 be able to seamless update to final release?

I don't know if you can still connect to the ubuntu repos when the support for the version 9.04 ends but if so you will be able to install new programs. The point is this: when the version is not supported any longer there will be no new versions and no new programs in the repos. This includes security updates and patches. That is the reason why people (including me) will advise you not to use a version which is not supported any longer. ( ie CB 9.04 )
About CrunchBang: CB did change its upstream distro (was ubuntu, is debian), this means CB9 is not in any (know) way upgradeable to CB10. (just as there is not any way but to reinstall is you want to change a normal ubuntu into debian )
in short: go for statler smile
hope this helps

as far as i know, the repos goes completely down after support ends.

I run  statler on my main machine and i can tell you, it IS stable.

Can I upgrade from statler alpha 2 to it's final release?

Not at this time, no. smile

I know many people upgrade alpha/beta/final but I have always enjoyed doing a fresh reinstall of the final release. It just feels "cleaner" to me that way. smile

If you have #!Statler A2 installed ... and keep up with the updates/upgrades ... there will be nothing to do when the Final release happens.

When Debian 6 Squeeze is released as the new 'stable' ... You'll already have it.

This may or may not be true (impossible to predict the future). Historically it has not been true. With past CrunchBang releases, users who upgrade from the alpha do not get the final release's user settings in /home (menus, openbox config, scripts, etc) unless they 1. do a fresh reinstalll, 2. copy the settings from /etc/skel, or 3. create a new user. This is desireable behavior of course; if you have spent time cutomizing your settings, you would not want upgrades to overwrite them. smile

I plan on doing a fresh reinstall, as I mentioned above. wink

Agreed ... but, past versions of #! have been based on Ubuntu ... and we know how they do things.
This new version of 'Statler' is based on Debian ... the transition should be easier.  From what I can tell from checking out Debian and their Forums.

Since, I don't know from personal experience ... Only time will tell.  cool
