Topic: Partitioning Hard Drive for Mint 9 on system that already has XP

Hi, I have a computer with XP on it, and I want to install Mint 9 also.  I have the Mint 9 Live CD and boot from it, but when I go to install Mint, it shows one partition:  /dev/sda1 ntfs   20546 MB      This partition is currently running XP.

I can't change the size of this partition, and if I click New Partition Table it says all current partitions will be removed.

Is it possible to add a partition to install Mint 9 on, without overwriting the XP os.

Am I correct then, in assuming that there is no way to install an operating system on a second partition without first making free space available in Windows.  The XP OS is currently not bootable, so I thought I'd install Linux while waiting for XP OS CDS.

Use something like GParted as a bootable CD.
