Topic: Basic LAN question

Hi fellow #!ers

Simple question (with i hope a simple answer.)

I have a laptop and a net book both connected via wireless to a Netgear router. Both have #! on them. What is the easiest/simplest way i can transfer files and access the folders on each machine from the other?

I'm a complete beginner when it comes to this kind of networking, so hoping there is an easy enough solution to this.

If you need more details let me know.

Thanks.

I don't know how to network in linux either but you could install an ftp server  on each computer. The server dose not need to be internet accessable

Re: Basic LAN question

There are (at least) two basic ways to share folders between the computers, NFS and Samba.

NFS is fine if both computers are running Linux; Samba is a good choice if you have Windows machines in the network or if you want to share a printer.

I am a beginner with this too, but happy to share the little I know. smile

Re: Basic LAN question

NFS is probably the best bet for full on sharing.

You might also want to look into Dropbox (auto-syncing up to two GBs of data) and Giver (easy to use file sharer -- in the repositories i think).

Re: Basic LAN question

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have made a start with Giver which is great as it seems to work straight off the bat. It's a bit annoying to have to accept the transfer on the other machine. I had a look across the web for some how-to assistance but it seemed lacking. Is there a way that i can either "trust" or always approve transfers from certain other users?

Otherwise i'll start trying to get my head round NFS.

I recommend that. With NFS, you can just mount a remote folder, so you can browse it like it was on your machine. With giver, you have to either accept all the files or clean out your downloads folder too often. With NFS you'll just choose the target directory and everything is fine.
