Topic: never thought anything would be better than KDE

I am still a newbie after 4+ years of using Linux. I don't really care for Gnome and have used Mepis as my main work distro most of the time I have used Linux. I multiboot 5 Linux distros as well as Windows XP. There is sooo much that I don't understand about computers that it's not funny. I have never tried Wine to run any Windows programs because from what I have read it would be just a get-by. Since I have the real thing, I just boot into XP when I need to use Quickbooks. I use Gnucash in Linux to keep up with my personal accounts but for other work that I do I still use QB. At present I have Crunchbang Statler Xfce, Mint 9 KDE, Mepis 8.5 KDE, PCLOS Xfce, PC/OS, and of course XP. I never thought any distro would woo me away from Mepis. I have found Mint to be something that I could like but never could leave Mepis for Mint. I first tried to install #! 9.04 but got steered toward Statler. I was dubious to say the least about trying an alpha release. I have been converted from Mepis to Statler. I do my daily work in #!. I still look at other distros and still am partial to KDE but Xfce might just be my favorite before long. The forum has been as good as any I have interacted with. Thanks Crunchbang team!

Thanks,
Harold

Continue using #! Statler and you'll find that it'll teach you a LOT about Linux in a very short amount of time.

A world without what makes us, us. One without you or me.
A world with no differences, this is the world I see.

Re: never thought anything would be better than KDE

I have learned more about how and why for of my computer, in 2 years of using Linux than I did in 25 years of using Windows.

And, I have learned lots more about Linux, in a few months, of using #!Crunchbang/Debian than I ever did with Xubuntu

I don't know if I would ever go back or be comfortable with any thing other than #! and Debian..

While I use and love Openbox ... I have been an Xfce fanatic since day one in Linux

Re: never thought anything would be better than KDE

It's funny how these things come and go. I started many moon ago with gnome, became a kde fanboy the eventually ended up back with gnome again with one of the very early ubuntu's. Then began an xfce/gnome backwards and forwards period (mainly with Arch and Zenwalk) before discovering CrunchBang and Openbox done properly. After the stall in development prior to Statler I discovered the joys of Xfce again on custom built Debian installs and now we have two lovely #!'s to choose from.

In recent times I must admit to wondering back to gnome. First out of convenience and looking for less workload with Mint 9 and now very impressed by the LMDE release. It reminds of the type of gnome desktop I used to run in Arch, lean but feature packed. I'd recommend it as a look see to anyone.

All that said I there has been several occasions when I have dipped back in to test a new kde release. I've been singularly unimpressed each time. I can't help but feel they lost their way with kde4. Still as long people are using Linux and happy with it I really couldn't care less what they use. We should all be grown up enough to appreciate diversity and not be so dogmatic about the environments that suite our workflows best. Gnome seems to suit my workflow the best because of its similarities to OSX which I also use quite extensively for graphics and video work.

What works for me the best most certainly will not suit others for a myriad of reasons. That rampant fanboyism that we see from time to time can be so destructive.

Oops, I'm getting a bit off-topic here </rambling>

Re: never thought anything would be better than KDE

I installed the xfce version of Statler on my samsung nc10 netbook as a trial and have come to prefer it over openbox. It now runs on my nettop as well.

The xfce packages run very sweetly. The ease of applying application shortcuts and the xfce window manager keybindings are nice. These can be done on openbox too, I know.

I also cannot see myself straying from #cb and Debian. There is a lot to learn here, so no time to get bored yet.
