Topic: Help me switch

Hey everyone! I am not exactly new to Linux. I have used ubuntu 3 years ago, I also have used Linux mint and DSL.

I decided to switch to #!Crunchbang Because what it has to offer. I really love the minimalistic look of it just like how DSL has. Also has a friendlier style similar to ubuntu *not that I know yet*

Anyways I have 3 big problems before switching over.

I have very bad wireless internet and I have dial up. I switch between the 2 for gaming. I like to play battle for wesnoth but I use dial up to play it. My satellite disconnects every 5 minutes or so for a few brief seconds which disconnects me from my game.

So, Dial up modem hardware is a TRENDNET TFM-560X. My wireless adapter is a NETGEAR N150 wireless wna1100 usb adapter. Does anyone know if the wireless would be supported out of the box? I can't use a wire even for temporary purposes because I live in a apartment with free wireless. My dial up, I wouldn't even know how to setup and I don't know if it would be supported even though its a hardware modem.

Last possibility and I might feel more comfortable with. Is a dual boot, I have no idea! How to even begin with it. I have 2 hard drives 1 IDE and 1 SATA. Windows xp is on the IDE drive and I have the SATA drive for storage. I could wipe the SATA within windows and then format it for linux. I don't know however to add both OS's to my startup of the computer.

Re: Help me switch

Both versions of CrunchBang (9.04 based on ubuntu -> soon out of support AND 10 "Statler" based on debian -> many here use already b/c is already stable) have a live boot option on the cd. so if you want to know about support of your hardware the easiest way to find out is to boot into live.

if you install Linux and want to dualboot linux and windows many modern linux systems (including CB) will offer you to install a boot loader. if you install the bootloader into the MBR(master boot record) of the hd which is set as first hd in the bios you shoud be able to choose the OS with your keyboard on boot.
come back with more questions if you need help.

Re: Help me switch

Well I downloaded the crunchbang lite 32bit overnight and burned it to a CD-R. I tried to boot it but it would get stuck on the very first loading part. sad
Then I did test cd for errors and it still got stuck right away on the first part of it loading in text.

I also tried the same cd in a different computer and it said there was a error right away with the CD, same error happened when I did check CD on that same PC.
I reburned the CD at 4x on a CD-R and I have the same exact problems with both pc's one wont even boot it past 2 lines of text on the loading. Second pc will give the same exact errors and the same exact error on checking CD.

I don't know whats wrong but I checked the MD5 and I got this "1e5941ad731153422eb54b9be46ebd93"
The website says "7495a9a62d3dc9cd38655daa1430525d" So its a mismatch... I don't even know what the MD5 is for, I thought I should check....

The size of the file on the website and my download match though...

I also tried using unetbootin to burn crunchbang to my USB flash drive. I tried everything in my bios to set up boot from the USB and I even tried Plug and Play OS. Nothing will work. This is a fairly new PC, I built myself. I am really eager to try this distro out... I never had such problems before though.

Re: Help me switch

What happens when you try to boot from USB?

I willfully participate in a campaign of misinformation!

Re: Help me switch

md5sum is a method to test if the data you got from somewhere got corrupted during transfer (i.e. error while downloading) to check this you could just compare every bit and byte of your file with the original file (on the server) but then you would just download it again (not very efficient smile) so the idea is to calculate a checksum (like the one in math only more complicated) and compare the checksums. that way you only download very little additional data and can be relatively sure that your file is ok (or be absolutely sure that it is not.)
so now you said your md5sums did not match. i think you have to do the download again (i'm sorry)

EDIT: out of curiosity: which version did you download? if it was not obvious before: i recommend version 10 (codename: Statler)

Re: Help me switch

Nothing happens when I boot from USB. I am guessing since it was probably corrupted during download. I thought it was because I didn't know how to set my bios to boot from USB.

As for the version. I downloaded 9.04 ...Where is the newer one at? As for downloading it this time around... My wireless is very slow. I am not allowed to download files over 100mb+ at this time. Only during the night after 2:00am - 7:00am the file I downloaded was 427mb and it took me roughly 4-5 hours to download lol...

I am worried about my download getting corrupted again. My internet speed spikes a lot between 20kbp/s and 60kbp/s sometimes it will even hit a low of 6kbp/s for a few seconds. Anyone know a way to be sure my DL wont get messed up? I know there is download managers for Firefox but I never used one before.

Re: Help me switch

the new version of CB is called "Statler" (version 10 like in 2010) and is based on Debian Squeeze
release notes
download
ok it says "development" but ask the people here, many are using it happily and say it is stable and great.
hope this helps
