Topic: [solved]xp won't boot after crunchbang statler install

I first defragged the xp partition, used disk clean on C drive, and deleted temp files. Then I used gparted to reduce the size of the xp partiton to 30 gb on a 120 gb drive. Then I created a 10 gb partition for the #! install, a 2 gb swap file, and used the remainder for a /home partition. The install went fine and did the updates and installed Open Office. Did some more tweaking like installing icedove and using another disktop picture. I even, I thought, reset grub to put xp as the default. Then when I re-booted xp was not the default and it got hung up during boot. After that I tried xp in safe mode. It got to system32 and hung again. I left it alone and did something else and when I came back it had booted into #!. I tried to use a XP cd to fix the mbr but so far am not able to do that. The first thing that I see on the screen even with the xp install cd is "welcome to grub" and then the menu. I typed in c at the boot menu and got to grub but don't know enough about what to do from there. I don't seem to be able to get to the xp cd to fix mbr. Does anyone have any ideas that I might try?

edit
In safe mode it gets to system32\drivers\mup.sys and then goes into safe mode. I also found that I didn't have a xp install cd in the drive. It was just sp2. I will regroup and post back after I try the actual xp install cd.

Re: [solved]xp won't boot after crunchbang statler install

I have managed to get XP booting again. I had a rescue disk that re-wrote the mbr. Another problem was created when I installed curnchbang. I made the root partition bootable. (why is that even there?) Well the rescue disk and gparted allowed me to make the xp partition bootable instead of the crundchbang partition. Hooray for rescue disks.

Now I had rather not re-install and go thru those updates again. How do I get grub re-installed? I'll be working on that also.

Thanks,
Harold

Got everything back to where it should be with grub2 installed and overwriting the mbr. Used the live cd in the rescue mode. Thanks for looking. Hope this helps someone else.
