Topic: crunchbang ageing

Hi,

I am still using cruncheee 8.10 on my eeepc, and little by little the performances decreased:

  • Boot time is now 1 min (from grub to fully loaded desktop, with auto login)

  • flash videos playback (youtube & co, not in HD) are not fluid anymore

My troubles may be caused by some hacking/tweaking attempts I made in the past, discovering linux and experimenting with many things. May have missed to clean some mess up at some point.

No big deal anyway, I am testing statler alpha 2, very satisfied (25 sec boot), will switch to it as main system when I have some time.

The #! 9.04 installed in my Vaio since 1 year+ is still fine.

Here are my questions:

  • In general, do linux distros get worst performance after being used during several years, in a same way as it happens in windows ?

  • Is it the case for #! ?

Thanks for your feedback

Re: crunchbang ageing

A fast boot is nice but isn't the only, or even the main, performance issue to worry about.

One possibility is that the boot has been profiled at some point, but the profile is no longer appropriate.  This could be caused by updated hardware, new software, or just by upgrading drivers.

Re: crunchbang ageing

Performance won't degrade just by time alone, but maybe an updated package can cause it.

I saw something about this over on Ubuntuforums this morning:

Not sure if it's relevant but there you go. smile
