How do I sync with NTP?

When I try to sync with internet servers a message box pops up saying I need to install ntp support. I clock install ntp support and the linux equivalent to the windows hour glass pops up for severals seconds then disappears. After it disappears I am right back where I started and unable to see any options to sync with an internet server. What should I do to make it so I can sync with the internet servers?
