Topic: Should I do a Minimal Install

I did a standard install of #!9.04
But with it, came tonnes of software I do not use. I feel I have a need to strip it and just keep essential core stuff that I use. But I am just tired of reinstalling after reinstalling due to DHA (Distro-Hopping-Addiction)
If I remove packages from "Synaptic" does that mean I have to remove it's folders manually too?
Unlike Windows, Does Linux keep crap in the ..... what windows call "Registry"?? If So, How can I Clean my "Registry" lol Wonder Whats it called ??

You cannot put a price tag on "#!Cool"

Re: Should I do a Minimal Install

For starters, the lite edition is pretty stripped. But apt does a good job of removing everything associated with an application, so you don't need to worry. I periodically run "apt-get clean," but that's just a result of paranoia. cool

Re: Should I do a Minimal Install

#! 9.04 is available in a "Lite" version that includes only the basic applications (browser, file manager, text editor, etc.). That would be my recommendation if you are very short on hard drive space or looking for a minimal platform to build upon.

Please understand that Linux is not Windows. In Linux, there is no performance benefit to removing apps you do not use, because apps do not use RAM or CPU until you launch them. The only benefit to uninstalling unused applications is freeing up a small amount of hard drive space. Therefore my advice is to simply ignore the apps you don't use. wink

Also, I would not personally waste a lot of time customizing a 9.04 install, as support for this release ends in less than a month.

Re: Should I do a Minimal Install

If you go through synaptic and remove applications that you don't use, you'll be fine. Just be aware of what dependencies are affected (it will prompt you), and don't get rid of anything that looks important.

Also, ditto to everything snowpine says above.

Ditto.

But you should still consider doing a minimal Ubuntu or minimal Debian install.

Re: Should I do a Minimal Install

Could you suggest a script to use to crunchify a current minimal Ubuntu or Debian minimal install? One from Omns scripts? But which one?

Re: Should I do a Minimal Install

^I got one for you, made for my own use.

Let's do it and don't screw it.
