Topic: Help with SATA2?

Hi smile

I have big problem with my new  HD disk. I bought a Samsung  hd462jj. But it is not shown in my bios settings. (And  even in my Linux)

I have read, that my motherboard will eventually not support sata2. But I'm not sure what kind of motherboard I own. Where can I look it  up? When booting I can only see, that I have a AMI BIOS. (v 2.61)

I also read, that I can use a tool provided from samsung, but this didn't work. I also tried all kind of jumpersettings.

What can I do to prove, that the hd is not defect? How can I enable it for proper work? Is there a kind of adapter to switch to sata1? sad

I have a ide hd witch is working fine.

Re: Help with SATA2?

as far as i know sata2 automatically changes in sata1 if support for sata2 is non existent
try connecting it to someone else's computer to check if it's just your computer

Re: Help with SATA2?

Thanks smile

I don't know anybody with a sata2 board sad No other possibilities? What about a adapter?

As I understood a "normal" HD should be jumpered to switch to the sata1 mode when the board doesn't recognizes the hd.

Re: Help with SATA2?

my mobo doesn't support sata2 and i run a sata2 drive on it anyway. no tweaking was required
but just for your satisfaction here's a direct quote from http://forums.tweakguides.com/

You can go ahead and buy the SATA 2 HDD, but since your mobo does not support SATA 2, the HDD will run only at SATA 1 (150Mb/s) performance level. Although the point remains that since no HDD is actually able to sustain a transfer rate of 300Mb/s or even 150Mb/s all the time, you may not notice much difference.

It is very similar to plugging a USB 2.0 device into a USB 1.1 port. Windows will warn you that the device may not function upto its potential, but it doesnt stop working or anything.

/Edit: Here is a page I found that explains the jumper settings. Look at the OPT1 setting that allows SATA 2 drives to run on SATA 1 ports.

Re: Help with SATA2?

It took me three days to make my new seagate sata2 HD to work with my older motherboard (product: P5GD1  vendor: ASUSTeK Computer INC.). My MB supports SATA1 only. So, I have to place a jumper to "convert" the disk from SATA2 to SATA1. (You will probably have to visit the manufacturer's web site to find this information for your HD). Once I placed the jumper, the BIOS recognized the disk, but I had then to find the right setting for the SATA/RAID controller, and then was finally able to install the operating system.

To find out what motherboard you have, go through this thread:

http://www.linux.com/learn/answers/7-ha … for-linux-

The program that I use for this purpose is "lshw"--it is very simple but gives lots of information.

Re: Help with SATA2?

@oldhand: I already jumpered it. That doesn't work. I already used 2 tools fom samsung also (they say on their webpage you have to use the tool to patch samung discs). But the tools didn't work.
Thanks for the link! This will be useful for me big_smile

@alexander: I know that most motherboards don't mind if a normal hd is sata2 when  they support sata1 only. But this hd is something "special", as a search in google says.

So nobody can answer my question about the adapter? I mean a kind of card which will transform sata2 devices to sata1...:(

You could try using a PCI card that has internal SATA II connectors and see if that works.

BTW if you wish to contact me, send me an e-mail instead of a PM.

Re: Help with SATA2?

Ok thank you. I gogled it and found a PCI card. I will try it smile

Eidt: Only for others who plan to buy this hd: This didn't work. Don't buy this hd when your pc is not sata2 ready...Finally I bought a new HD.
