Topic: CrunchBang mentioned in article about Cut

There is a strong posibility that Debian may release a version based on Testing called Cut there is an article here www.go2linux.org/mt/linux-ht/2010/10/new-branch-on-debian-1.html that mentions CrunchBang.

Re: CrunchBang mentioned in article about Cut

I was just reading the article here, some very exciting ideas (and from there links to mailing lists, etc.).

The project's not yet implemented, but looks like it might be.

It seems very interesting in light of some debates I came across here, basically on how to make use of what Debian offers at this point (unstable, testing...) and make it into a kind of a rolling Crunchbang, if and when this version of Crunchbang becomes officially stable and gets permanently linked to a stable Squeeze.

I think this would beat simply changing the sources list... but I wonder if the developer even favors rolling releases. Then again, from that point on (being given a Debian rolling, and CB to mix), I don't think it would be rocket science to configure our own wink

Re: CrunchBang mentioned in article about Cut

It is easy to make "rolling release CrunchBang" by changing your sources.list to "unstable" (or "sid"). Not sure that the "CUT" project is necessary. But I applaud any project that's approached with enthusiasm, go for it! smile

@snowpine
Yeah, but wouldn't that give us an unstable rolling release? The article suggest a stable rolling branch.
I agree with the cut thingy beeing redundant.

Re: CrunchBang mentioned in article about Cut

I would never run Sid under the #! hoodie. Don't feel myself skilled enough to solve when it seriously breaks down. What if I can't even access the Internet to google for the solution? Saying this after four or five years spent in Linux world.

CUT seems awsome! Good idea. Not a big difference from Testing though, but I can imagine there are many of us who would prefer such a system to the way it is now with Testing. I would feel myself even better than now. smile

Re: CrunchBang mentioned in article about Cut

If and when this gets implemented, it would definitely be nice for Linux Mint Debian and CrunchBang Statler users.

stable rolling = jumbo shrimp

Re: CrunchBang mentioned in article about Cut

Well "Cut" would be stabler rolling branch. Although testing does fill the gap between unstable and stable, its not perfect for use in a desktop environment. Having the "Cut" branch would help address its issues.

The article I linked to addresses some I think real concerns, and why there would be definitive benefits in an actual Debian rolling over simply using sid, or testing in this case, as rolling.

Re: CrunchBang mentioned in article about Cut

I agree with the article that Testing a) is not "true" rolling release, and b) "is not intended for normal use, but for development and testing of the new stable version."

The obvious solution (to me) is to use Sid. In my experience, the way to get a "stable rolling release" (which, again, is an oxymoron... but I do understand what is meant) is to get upstream packages as quickly as possible so that bugs are fixed ASAP. Sid is the first of the Debian branches to get bug fixes, security patches, new hardware drivers, etc. Why would you not want these features if you are looking for "rolling release nirvana?" The article really makes 2 good arguments not to use Testing, but no substantial argument not to use Sid...

It also does not mention Stable + Backports (my own personal preference), which is a pretty glaring omission IMO. A stable base distro, plus newer versions of the kernel and end-user applications.

Speaking of which, what do yall think about the Debian GNU/kFreeBSD project?  I'm really excited about it.
