Topic: 64Bit,Netbook,mouse issues?

Im trying to install 64 bit Statler on my netbook,Heres my issue.
When booting into live mode,It all seems fine until i touch the mouse pad,
When i do the only thing that works is the right and left  and up and down scrolling.
When i right click to bring up the menu, and try to use my mouse to select,It all goes wrong.
Things open i didnt click, and the window selector wil change back and forth.

It acts like its possessed,,LOL

Im positive its a mouse pad issue im just not sure how to fix it.

Its a Gateway LT series
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual-core Processor L310
and a multi gesture keyboard.

Id like to get the live environment running to see if my wifi and hardware work.
If i cant i might just go ahead with the install anyway, just to see if its any different.

Any help or input will be appreciated.

Re: 64Bit,Netbook,mouse issues?

I just tried a full install,And my mouse pad is pretty usless,Once i touch it,It just starts doing crazy things like choosing between the two desktops repeatedly.Ive tryed to turn a desktop off carefully, but have no luck,,Im finding this very entertaining,,LOL

I was able to get one of the two desktops turned off,Now when i toouch the mouse pad it acts like a middle click.
Im wondering if it a setting or a driver issue,,How do i find out what mouse i have and what i need to remedy this ?

Re: 64Bit,Netbook,mouse issues?

You might try some of these links.  You seem to have a similar problem, as mine.  You never know.

I recently bought an Apple/Mac MagicPad (touchpad) to replace my mouse on the Acer PC.  I don't use a Mac computer ... just the keyboard and Magic-touchpad.
The MagicPad worked out of the box basically . . .  but, I had to re-configure some thing to make it work at 100% efficiency.
"Tap to click" and "2-finger scrolling" didn't work initially.

http://superuser.com/questions/170044/h … -boot-camp
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-touch
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trackpad

I Google a lot and try to read everything I can find about a computer problem I have . . . lol

Basic Configuration with a Graphical Interface
Ubuntu provides configuration of the most common touchpad options in System > Preferences > Mouse, under the Touchpad tab.

Try the touchpad after unchecking the Enable mouse clicks with touchpad check box.

Check operation after Enable horizontal scrolling is checked. This may not have been the default setting.

If all else fails, when using two hands for operation, remember to lift your finger off of the touchpad when leaving a scroll bar, window or workspace.

Troubleshooting
Determine whether a touchpad has been detected
To check if a touchpad has been detected open a terminal and check the input device list given by this command:

xinput list

If one of the lines mentions a touchpad (perhaps also "Synaptics" or "ALPS"), your touchpad has been detected.

If one of the lines mentions an "ADB mouse", then your touchpad is old. Use the trackpad command line tool to configure it.

Here's an example to switch on tapping and dragging:

sudo trackpad show
sudo trackpad tap
sudo trackpad drag

Re: 64Bit,Netbook,mouse issues?

Thank you for posting this,Ive tried Fedora/Ubuntu 10.10 and Crunchbang 9.04 along with statler.
I wish i had a regular mouse to see if it works,,But i dont at this time.

10.10 for some reason i couldnt get it to istall,,kept crashing,,Im redoing unetbootin.
I have this same touchpad on my Acer quad core amd and havent had an issue.

I figure theres got to be an easy way to disable all this. But without the touchpad im lost.
Ill keep playing and hopefully i figure out a workaround.

Ive also tried a 32bit Statler,Still no luck.

Re: 64Bit,Netbook,mouse issues?

This morning before work i decided to give 10.04 a try,Just for the hell of it.
It worked.Im not sure why ?

Now id like to figure out why it works with 10.04 and not in #!9.04/Statler alpha2 ,10.10 and Fedora.
Im thinking it might be the Kernel,So my plan is to find the Kernel number and try to install in #! Statler.

  Is this Possible ?

And if so,How can i do it without using the mouse pad ?

At this stage im just happy i dont have to use winblows,,lol

Or maybe even the mouse driver could be different,Im just not sure how to check that,,,,Yet..

The one thing ive learned about linux is,Theres always a work around, its just a matter of finding it.

Re: 64Bit,Netbook,mouse issues?

Heres what ive learned about my Gateway LT amd athlon 64 bit computer.

It has an AlpsPS/2 glide pointer touchpad.
The Linux Kernel 2.6.32.5 that Alpha has doesnt seem to use the driver correctly,Or doesnt see it at all.
I was able to install Gpointing device to control the settings of the touchpad. In Ubuntu 10.04 this tool showed
my usb mouse and my Alps touchpad,Clicking the scrolling off worked in Ubuntu.

In #! Alpha it wouldnt read it,I tryed reinstalling the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics driver,to see if i could make it work,,But no luck.

I then tryed TP config with no luck.

So then i decided to try a new kernel that was in synaptic, Whats in there didnt seem to work.
Ubuntu uses 2.6.32-21 generic,I looked for the debian version but had no luck finding it.

Once i lost my network manager after a autoremove,,,LOL,,I gave up for the night.

Re: 64Bit,Netbook,mouse issues?

Ive got it Semi Resolved,Most of the newer Kernels dont recognize my Alps Touchpad for some reason.
All the fixes i have found are alittle over my head, and dont explain exactly step by step how to fix it.

Alpha2 wouldnt work,I went threw a bunch of distros and 10.04 worked with the older kernels.

I installed Alpha 1 with no issues,I updated threw synaptic and its still good.
I will attempt to upgrade tonight and see what happens,If that goes wrong i can always revert to the old Kernel.

I wont mark as resolved yet,But if all goes well im hoping to do so by posting what Kernel works with the Alps
touchpad.

Re: 64Bit,Netbook,mouse issues?

Is gsynaptics installed? Please check with a terminal.

Yes,I have found ways to get it to work with older kernels.
But once a Kernel upgrade happens it goes hay wire again.

I did something very wise,I reinstalled Windows7 and gave it to my niece who killed hers,,LOL
Then Purchased Acers version of that Gateway with an intel Atom dual core,Statler alpha 2 only had one install issue that was easily remedied.
No Wifi,But as always,I found help here on Broadcom installation.
