Re: What is your default wm/de that you run Crunchbang with?

ScrotWM (or spectrwm now I suppose) is where I'm most comfortable.

I find some tilers try to be too complex and bloated. They include so many bindings its amazing, have a tray area, widgets, etc.

scrotwm has some really nice sane default bindings, and all I need is a small conky to output the information I need.

it works great, stays out of the way and lets me get stuff done.

Re: What is your default wm/de that you run Crunchbang with?

I was under the impression that crunchbang itself pretty much is Debian + Openbox.

That said, I use Openbox. If I wanted to use something else I would do a Debian netinst and install another DE. I have used Gnome (on both Ubuntu 10.04 and Debian) and XFCE (on debian) and Openbox is definitely my DE of choice. Simple, small, and doesn't get in the way.

Re: What is your default wm/de that you run Crunchbang with?

I will say it again: it's silly to install another distro (or netinstall Debian) just to change the window manager. It's easy to change the WM in #! with apt-get. See this thread: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … n-30-days/

And you are confusing DE (desktop environment) with WM (window manager). Xfce, LXDE, and KDE are desktop environments. Openbox is a window manager, not a DE. LXDE (a DE) by defaut uses Openbox as its WM, but you can change it.

Before  Crunchbang i used ubuntu 10.04 + compiz (not standalone). Now the solution for me is openbox + cairo composite manager

I will say it again, in the case that i decide to use a different WM/DE, I will choose other distro, which have the best of the chosen WM/DE, specially with a DE

Really? This happens? Where? How? Certainly, for instance, any DE/WM for #! and Debian will be exactly identical, as they use the same repositories. If you mean that the default configuration is different, you *are* allowed to change that tongue (And most WMs are not the default for any distribution: if you wanted to use ratpoison, frinstance, I can't think of a distro which has it as default...)

^ Salix has it.

I will say it again, you do not have to change the distro. lol
I will say it again, you can just take Debian and customize it. lol

What is better? No idea. But indeed I use plain Debian.

#! is Debian, do like you all prefer, that is the beauty of choice, many ways to solve a problem.

Re: What is your default wm/de that you run Crunchbang with?

@ivanovnegro - so it does. However, the point still stands that:
1) I don't believe that some distributions 'have the best of chosen DE', whatever that can be said to mean
2) If you want to use a number of the more obscure WMs, you will have a very limited choice if you only use distros on which they come preinstalled.
3) There will be some WMs which do not come with any distro, and the logic given by alfbar1 would lead to not using them for no good reason.
(Sawfish? 9wm? aewm++? afterstep? herbsluftwm?)

As an analogy, alfbar1, if you wanted to use chromium rather than firefox (well, iceweasel), would you use a different distribution? If you wanted to use rtorrent over transmission, would you use different distros? It's going to rapidly get very difficult to find distributions with all the key software that you want...

All a matter of how you're looking at it I'd say.
If one does not wish to bother with setting up a new WM from scratch a installation of pre-configured version in a designated distro might be an option.
A bit radical perhaps but if one has the space why not, especially if one would only want to give it a test spin.

Of course when it comes to the "lesser" exposed WM's the selection of possible Distros becomes very limited, as you rightly pointed out but certainley for the DE's this is not a problem.

I recently started using pekwm, it's quite nice.

Re: What is your default wm/de that you run Crunchbang with?

Well, I just discovered #! and Openbox so that's what I'm using right now.

When I was using Arch I loved i3.  What a great tiling window manager.  I loved the simple configuration because I don't have the patience to try and learn weird and complicated programming just to configure the WM.  I'm looking at you Xmonad.

Re: What is your default wm/de that you run Crunchbang with?

I find myself switching between Gnome3 --classic and Openbox, depending on my mood. I love OB as I was always a fan of Fluxbox, and that was the WM I used when I ran Slackware.

I'm really curious about MATE though, thinking about installing that when I get home. Running #! with OB is great when I want to run a couple VMs, but when I'm not doing that, I do enjoy having a full DE running. Has anyone used MATE in Debian yet? Or installed the MATE/Cinnamon spin of Linux Mint Debian?

Re: What is your default wm/de that you run Crunchbang with?

Openbox on my desktop with multiple monitors.

Lately I've been testing some tiling window managers on my 12" laptop. I tend to dislike the trackpad, so the keyboard management of window sizes and locations is very appealing. I really liked spectrwm (scrotwm), but I need a tray, and I wouldn't mind some other features, so now I'm testing out awesome and i3.

Re: What is your default wm/de that you run Crunchbang with?

I am running Openbox on my Statler server, but I am currently trying Xfce on a Waldorf secondary desktop box which I use occasionally. I'm not yet sure which I will choose once I install #! on my primary system, a four-year-old HP laptop, yet; Openbox would force me to learn a lot of useful things about configuration files and whatnot, but Xfce is more within my current comfort zone. Ah, well - we shall see! smile

Xfce all the way.  I had Statler Xfce on my computer for most of 2011, but left when I saw that the Xfce version was going to be discontinued.  I spent the first half of this year looking for a distro I liked as well as Statler Xfce, but couldn't find one.  So last week, I decided to install Waldorf -- and with installing Xfce and completely removing Openbox and everything associated with it.  To quote Frank Sinatra, "I did it my way".

I would make a reference to Burger King, but I don't want to seem like I spend much time absorbing commercials. Heh, heh.

But in all seriousness, this is the lovely thing about #! and Linux-based systems in general: one is allowed to do things exactly as one wants. What a stark contrast to this!

I have just discovered Crunchbang and am currently getting to know Openbox. I've used Gnome and recently xfce but must say so far the default Crunchbang setup is great.
