Skype and 64 bit waldorf? [SOLVED]

Is there a way to install Skype on 64 bit crunchbang waldorf? The package on Skype's (http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-sky … ter/linux/) site claims to be 'multiarch', but gdebi tells me it's compiled for i386 and thus refuses to install it.

Re: Skype and 64 bit waldorf? [SOLVED]

No, I missed those threads because I didn't find the forum search tool at first big_smile

This worked:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get update

I also needed to install ia32-libs, and now it seems to work. Thanks for your help!

VDP76

I quit Waldorf and it's inability to run Skype was one reason.
Please give the step by step Skype install.
Keep it simple so even I can install Skype in Waldorf.

I using Mint 13 xfce 64 bit and would like to go back to Waldorf.
In Mint we use Synaptic for installing Skype.
If I can get Google Talk to work also, then I'm back.

Using Statler on another box and it does almost does everything I desire.

I liked Bayreuth.

Danke

Re: Skype and 64 bit waldorf? [SOLVED]

Hashi Godan, Waldorf is indeed able to run Skype. The only difference with Mint is that you can't find it in the repositories so it has to be installed manually:

- go to skype website and download the installer for Debian 7 (it is a .deb file)
- open a terminal and, assuming you run Waldorf 64bit, type

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get update

- from the terminal browse into the folder where the new .deb file is, for example

cd ~/downloads

- install skype

sudo dpkg -i skype-debian_[version]_i386.deb

- in case of complains from dpkg, install missing dependencies

sudo apt-get -f install

- now skype should work...

Goolge talk should work without problem, just install the plugin from Google's website...

yeap, Bayreuth is a nice little town.. wink

Re: Skype and 64 bit waldorf? [SOLVED]

For some reason the sound didn't work for me before installing ia32-libs, so in addition do:

sudo apt-get install ia32libs

This will take some ~150 MB of diskspace, but that's not a biggie. I have no idea why the sound didn't work without it though... big_smile

I used to run Mint on my older machine too, but I didn't like the latest Mint Debian version at all. It got completely borked from a simple system upgrade and I wasn't really crazy about the overly flashy UI either. Waldorf is much nicer wink

Re: Skype and 64 bit waldorf? [SOLVED]

I've tried this and other solutions but none worked. Finally I have skype 4.1.0.20 (Dynamic version) runing on #! 11 (waldorf).

Besides steps in prior posts I've made:

sudo apt-get install libxss1:i386
sudo apt-get install libqt4-core:i386
sudo apt-get install libqt4-gui:i386
sudo apt-get install libdbus-1-3:i386
sudo apt-get install libxv1:i386
sudo apt-get install libqtwebkit4:i386
sudo apt-get install libasound2:i386
sudo apt-get install libsm6:i386
sudo apt-get install libasound2-plugins:i386

hope this help.

Re: Skype and 64 bit waldorf? [SOLVED]

I installed Skype on Waldorf 64-bit using these instructions. PulseAudio and the webcam are working as well (Thinkpad X131e.)

Frustrating that we have to install 244MB of i386 libs. Is there a way we can put pressure on Skype to release an actual 64-bit build or are we stuck for now? (Unfortunately, I have to use Skype for work so I can't simply switch to a more free-as-in-freedom alternative.)

Actually libpulse0:i386 is quite enough to get Skype to use PulseAudio - ia32-libs is deprecated in Wheezy:

"This is a transitional package used to migrate the ia32-libs package
to true multiarch. It can be removed once nothing on the system
depends on it."

Re: Skype and 64 bit waldorf? [SOLVED]

Give Jitsi a try , it supports google chat and many others. The more people using it the better, we need a good skype alternative for linux.

@the cumpareddu --- welcome to #!, do you have Skype working in Waldorf?
I thought it had stopped working in Debian...

Re: Skype and 64 bit waldorf? [SOLVED]

@Head_on_a_Stick (and anybody else interested)  Yes, it works now. Failed at the first attempt, the trick then was to do update-upgrade after every  single step of the procedure.... I would be happy to do without Skype, but is the only way to keep in touch with a few good (non linux user) friends.
