Re: Steam BETA..

I'm planning on it. I'll probably have to wait for the public beta though, as I have a feeling they only want Ubuntu users for their closed one.

I can't wait for the Source engine to be ported. I'm so close to not having to boot into W*ndows to play games now!

Just got accepted in beta today. 27 total games for Linux so far. I have thirteen already, pretty neat. Now I can have a buddy over and do some local lan on Killing Floor without him lugging his equipment over

Re: Steam BETA..

I got in, much to my surprise. Curious to see how this goes.

Edit: Well, it didn't go at all. All my install attempts turned up tons of dependency errors, and trying to just run it anyway didn't work either. How did you guys get it running?

I got the install done OK via the script, but still get stuck on this error. Dunno why they can't put a proper 64bit build together...

I get very impatient when it comes to games and at the first sign of trouble, I installed Ubu.  Had Steam running in less than 30 mins, including the distro install big_smile

I'm on 64-bit Waldorf.

The way I got it working on my 64bit system involved installing *loads of* 32 bit libraries (*dependency hell*). Try  installing the libraries you need but for the i686 architecture (this means also having to fetch ia32 libs) it should work -- but it's a *really* painful process.

Re: Steam BETA..

Hmm. I run steam at /usr/bin/steam (or just "steam" in terminal...same thing). I can't find the script you seem to be running (mine doesn't have a line 301 like your error message is referring to). Not sure if this will help, but your first error message seems to be related to this.

Re: Steam BETA..

I think the Kano script isn't running correctly for me. One of the last things it does before quitting is "Removing steam...", which doesn't make any sense. I found reference in the script to the script I referenced above, which is how I knew to try it, but as you can see, it doesn't work.

An alternative distro designed just to run Steam is a great idea, actually. Ubuntu is such a pile of bloatware it's hardly better (and in some ways worse) than using a Windows machine to play games. I'm sure lots of gamers would prefer something streamlined like #!.

Re: Steam BETA..

The 32-bit dependancies you need are sdl libvorbis alsa-lib libgcrypt gtk2 nss openal libpng12 libpulse canberra glu. Not sure what the exact names of the packages are in debian, but those are the upstream libraries you need. You might also need to install a times new roman or equivalent font for steam to use. Really though, unless you got accepted into the beta I wouldn't even bother. All you can do is play world of goo and some random indie games. The only reason I even have it installed is just to talk to people.

Re: Steam BETA..

I used this post to get me up and running. Unfortunately, most (linux) games I own do not work on #!. They start, but usually crash or do not draw anything. I haven't debugged it however, too much to do, but so far, on Ubuntu 12.10-64, they worked out of the box... hmm

Re: Steam BETA..

I've had to switch to ArchBang. Steam works fine on Arch and ArchBang is the closest I can get to #! and all it's awesomeness. Although if we can find a fix I'd jump back on this ship.
