problems with gnome desktop icons????

So I heard if I edit the user-dir.dir file I can limit what is displayed on the desktop but every time i restart (Or logout & back on) it returns to its normal state. iv tryed editing it with su rights and still same result. So how do i change the file and make it stay ? any help would be much appreicated im very new with gnome just switched it today from openbox just for icons tryed the pcfman that did the same thing.

Hi Anarchy-life, if the only reason you switched to Gnome was to get desktop icons, you might want a look here first:
