Help with a reinstall

I'm still having problems with reboots where sometimes the computer hangs on restart (exactly as described here:  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … g/1081819).  Pulling the battery always fixes it.  I've decided to try again with a fresh install.

1.  If I delete the partition that #! is on, will that get rid of grub too?  That is, will I just have a plain old Windows 7 computer again?

2.  Does it matter whether I install 32- or 64-bit?  I already have the 32-bit version downloaded, but I think I'll get the 64-bit version just in case.

3.  When I let the installer set up the partition, it always sets up two logical partitions (one for the system, one for swap) rather than a primary partition.  Will this make any difference?  I had problems getting grub to load at all before, and I attributed that to having logical vs. primary partitions, but it may not have mattered.

I didn't have a swap partition before, but I will this time.  Any other advice before I start fresh, to make this run a bit smoother than last time?

First at all, i´m an austrian and speaks not perfect english .....

To 1.) ......the grub from #!Crunchbang was installed in the Master Boot Record ...... when you will changed between windows and Crunchbang ....first you must install windows and then CrunchBang .....

To 2.) .... Is your machine an x86_64 ? ...... when yes, why not ? It´s not a big differenz between stable, fast and programms ....

To 3.) ....You have the choice between Logical Volume and not .....at the CrunchBang Setup .......i´m driving without LV
Normaly you don´t must be have a Swap-Partiton, but any Programms pick it up for nothing but you must be have one for right running of this programms ............SWAP = YES it´s my mean .........then you have no problems that running programms normaly ....

It wil not get rid of Grub. To use only Windows, you will have to boot your Windows live disc and let it repair the MBR. If you're reinstalling, all you need to do is reinstall like the first time, and the process will set up Grub.

You want a 64 bit system, it works better. And no, the fact that logical partitins were made instead of primary ones has nothing to do with performance. You want swap.

With the size of disks these days you may as well have a swap partition.
(Equal to your physical ram.)

Extended partition lets you have more than 4 on a disk.

Personally I would have at least a /, swap, & home partition.
(Sizes depend on your computer usage.)

OK, thanks all for your help.  This computer doesn't have a Windows disk (or a cd rom drive for that matter), so I guess I'm out of luck for removing grub and starting from scratch.  I'm going to delete the current install (32-bit) and reinstall using the 64-bit Waldorf.  Hopefully, something along the way will fix the reboot problem.

Most windows disks are on a hidden partion of the computer. Search for your model of computer and "recovery" or simular key term.

I don't really feel like restoring Windows to its original state.  The computer is a few years old and it would take days of updates and restarts.

Maybe I'll give it a try.  In the meantime, I've reinstalled #! and I still get the occasional reboot issue.  It's never happened (so far) when rebooting from Windows, so it doesn't seem to be a Windows or a grub problem.  It's frustrating -- maybe I'll try Statler and see if that has the same problem.

This computer is getting slow in Windows, and is much more responsive with #!.  However, I'm not the main user of this particular laptop, my wife is, and she'll get frustrated pretty quickly if she has to pull the battery from time to time.  I guess I'll try Statler this week sometime and report back.

On that Bug report it says its not filed against a pakage. So I think we need to see your logs to see whats going on. I would also update the bios and kernel on that computer in that order.

I'm not shure which one but I would start at the syslog

When you say you pull the battery to fix it do you mean you are doing a hard shutdow like holding the power button for a few seconds? or is it the act of the kernel hanging on the battery maybe a bad module loaded.

Could you post your computer  model.

My computer is a Toshiba Satellite T215D.  It has an AMD Athlon II Neoo K325 Dual-Core processor.  Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, is currently the main operating system.  There's 2GB of memory and I now have two partitions, main and swap, with Crunchbang Waldorf 64-bit on them, in addition to the Windows partition.

Crunchbang shuts down normally.  When I turn the computer on, I get the boot splash screen, and then I get a fixed cursor in the corner.  Normally, I would see that cursor for a very short time (less than a second), and then "Grub Loading", but sometimes, the fixed cursor stays there for maybe 20 seconds, then it thins out and starts blinking, and that's it.  Grub never loads.

When that happens I can press the power button (just briefly, I don't need to hold it down, and the computer powers off), turn the laptop over, remove the battery, put it back in, press the power button and Grub loads normally.  Alternatively, I can press the power button briefly and at the splash screen, hit F12 to boot off a USB stick, boot into a live #! session, shut down, and then I can power up normally.

So:

In Windows, shut down.  Next power up -- all is fine, grub loads normally.

In #!, shut down.  Next power up, sometimes grub doesn't load, the computer hangs.  To remedy that I can either:
1.  Power down (briefly press the power button), pull the battery, and power up and grub will load normally, or,
2.  Power down (briefly press the power button), boot into a live session, power down again, then power up and grub will load normally.

It's intermittent, and I haven't figure out what, if anything, I'm doing during the #! session that could be causing the problem.

Well, I went and installed statler, and I have the same occasional problem at boot.  Very frustrating.  Pulling the battery always seems to fix the problem.

The only thing I picked up from that article is that I should update my bios.  I'll see if I can figure that out.  The rest of it has to do with power management, and that doesn't seem to be my issue.  The computer powers off just fine, sleeps, hibernates, and all that.  It just doesn't always start up.

I checked on the BIOS and it's fully up-to-date.  Was there something else I should have picked up from that page?

Man, I really thought installing Statler would have fixed it.

2/ Try 'acpi=off' as boot parameter. Just to make sure it is an acpi problem.
Of course you will lose all acpi functionality, so it is not a permanent solution.

(1) So, all of dmesg?  It's pretty big.  Also, only after grub has failed to start, or anytime?
(2) I can try that, but as I mention, the grub startup problem is intermittent.

sometimes replacing the cmos battery with a fresh one can help.  Also are you running the laptop with a battery in it or just off the ac with no battery in it?  Me personally I never like my system  suspend or hiberate because on every computer i worked on in the shop its caused problems.

Could it be flaky power supply?

Try installing a more recent kernel and see if you get the same problems - use 'smxi' to install towo or liquorix kernel, or if you want to stay with Debian the most recent kernel from experimental.

I think it happens whether it's plugged in or on battery, so a flaky power supply seems unlikely.  And, it's never happened rebooting from Windows or from a live session.

What happens if I install a newer kernel?

Impossible to tell. Worst case scenario, it doesn`t fix your issue, and even could introduce new issues. But if that`s the result, then simply remove the kernel, and your back at the current state. Best case scenario, it fixes all your issues. In sshort terms, you have a lot to gain, and nothing to loose. As always, backing up important stuff is so basic, that I hardly will mention it...

Instead of smxi, I prefer adding the siduction base repo, and picking a kernel from them. Because they store lots of kernels, and you don`t have to pick the latest one. Siduction kernel 3.5.4 is a exellent choice.

OK, so far I'm too chicken to install a different kernel.  However, it's possible I've found what's causing the problem, and maybe it's related to acpi (which I'm also to chicken to adjust so far).

I think the reboot problem only occurs after a session where the machine spent some time sleeping (or suspended?  whatever the proper linux term is for when the lid is closed and the power light slowly turns on and off).  I hadn't had the reboot problem in a while, and then it happened today, and I noticed that it had slept during the session.  So, I tried powering on with and without putting it to sleep and it seems correlated.

Does that more clearly point to the acpi problem?
