I'm a long-term serial beginner-level linux sniffer.
I've tried ubuntu and liked it, and now have mint installed and love it.
I'm currently trying to spend as much time as possible at command line to force myself to learn it.
I'm also interested in mathematics and would love! to get a stable system running -at least- the following:
1. vim (with vim-latex-suite properly installed and configured)
2. texmaker (or some appropriate replacement)
5. python and/or perl so i can try my hand at learning a programming language
6. alpine for email
7. VLC or substitute for hassle-free easily-configurable DVD player (my chief recreation)
I'm also interested in trying a form of linux that is resource-lean, and -important: fast!
Ideally, it should also be a distro such that I can download it straight to a usb drive, from which I can boot it and store programs and files, as I am a bit of a nomad.
Is CrunchBang likely to be the distro for me?
i think #! is a good alternative for you, download and dd to usb;
welcome and have fun
Time to move on!#
Sounds like you'd enjoy #!. Give it a shot; it's a wonderful user experience and will give you ample opportunity to learn the CLI.
But really.... vim? EMACS!

Hey guys and gals, thanks for the warm welcome.
I'm downloading Lite crunch now.
I'll definitely be back to ask a heap of questions and hopefully leave some reasonably sane and readable comments.
Very nice of you to make me feel so welcome!

Sam Beckett said that.
