Update 2013-09-19: With Iceweasel 24 landing on my systems today, the problem is fixed
With recent update to Iceweasel 23 and update to Ghostery 5.0.3, Ghostery's icon no longer shows when starting Iceweasel. Authors seems to claim Ghostery still loads and blocks things in background, but from personal experience at least cookies doesn't get blocked.
To fix, on each start of Iceweasel go to Add-ons and disable then re-enable Ghostery and all is well until you close Iceweasel again. Also one report states it'll be fixed if you create a new Iceweasel-profile and use it instead, which I didn't test yet, but I did reset my profile and that didn't help at all.

Just to add an official response. If you are running a derivative of Firefox such as Iceweasel, Palemoon, Icedragon, or whatever, Ghostery 5.0 requires something called Jetpack to be present in the derivative release. In most cases as of August 23, its not present or not installed correctly in any of them, so please reach out to the support forum of the derivative Firefox you are running and let them know that they should really support Jetpack in their releases.
For the time being, 2.9.6 is the only release that will work on all of the derivatives, tho IceWeasel and Palemoon support personnel told us that the next appropriate release for that platform will support Jetpack.
[Edit] ShareMeNot has same problem and I now realized some other addons are affected by this too, like Collusion, so have to wait for an Iceweasel update...
