Crunchbang, stripped

Inspired by the sub 100 thread here: http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=22197 I decided to see how far down I can strip crunchbang and still have a bootable system.

There are two levels I wish to reach.  First, I want to have the bare minimum for apt-get, so I can start building a system back up. Secondly, I'd like to strip it down past apt-get, to the minimum that will boot that still has wget, sudo and gcc, so I can get packages and build them. I want something close to Linux From Scratch.

I thought I might detail at least some of my progress here. I'm going to do it in a virtual box so I can copy paste text and take screen shots.

The first thing I will strip out is all the desktop stuff like openbox, gnome, and any desktop applications.

I thought someone might like to contribute, compare and compete. We can play a fun little game.

Re: Crunchbang, stripped

this sounds interesting, but might you have an easier time if you use plain debian as your starting point...?

Re: Crunchbang, stripped

The minimum Linux would be a kernel with a shell, everything else adds to its usefulness. smile
If you start stripping #! - then it won't be #! - It'll be Debian. hmm
If you use gcc, that will 'bloat' your system.  devil

Edit: Maybe use a netboot Debian as a start (?).

Re: Crunchbang, stripped

To do something like this, I chose a Debian netinstall. It works really fine now, but of course it took me lots of hours to get it the way I want it.

Re: Crunchbang, stripped

The fun isn't in starting from scratch(who hasn't done that?), its cutting pieces out without breaking it entirely. Last time I got as far as uninstalling everything listed in the menus, but once I tried to uninstall openbox/SLiM, it removed something critical to the file system.

I got it under 900 packages, which is pretty good considering that crunchbang starts at 1100.

I think I will write a script that differences the package list from the complete install. Every time I remove something, it can get a new list, and I can easily restart at a point once removed from the failure.
