[RESOLVED] ALSA disapeared

Im at my wits end. short walk, i know.  tongue

I updated my #! stable yesterday. today I seem to have No ALSA.

$ aplay -l

:~$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:252: no soundcards found...
:~$

a history of my sound system on this machine;
basic #! install
installed Jack audio following the instructions here;
http://trac.jackaudio.org/wiki/WalkThro … ulseOnJack
it worked fine until I turned on my comp today and found ALSA had disappeared.

I Have 'googled' (duckduckgo.com) and searched these forums to no avail. (I may not know what to ask exactly).

synaptic shows that i have a bunch of alsa stuff installed.

when i tried to open pavolume control it gave me instructions to run "start-pulseaudio-x11"

xxxxxx:~$ sudo start-pulseaudio-x11
[sudo] password for a1:
W: [pulseaudio] main.c: This program is not intended to be run as root (unless --system is specified).
xxxxxxx:~$ start-pulseaudio-x11

pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused
xxxxxx:~$

I followed the instructs on this page  (as much as I could) thinking it might help;
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578

And Then, after a restart, I tried opening QjackCtl and initiating a connection from there. this is what it told me;

SOooo, Here are my questions;
how do i find out - what happened to my ALSA
and                    - how  to re initialize my ALSA
                             (reinstall everything to do with ALSA does not seem to be the answer)
- or do I need to just reinstall my #! and start again?

Thanks for anything you can tell me, please ask me whatever you need to clarify my bumbling attempts to describe this issue.

{trying to not be anything close to a "help-vampire". I realize that I' not the brightest knife in the chandelier but I do use my comp to help people live (no, I don't make money doing it, and I am  too poor for Micro$oft's pay-us schemes) and i need this comp to do that stuff. thanks}

Re: [RESOLVED] ALSA disapeared

Check the state of the main ALSA packages:

apt-cache policy alsa-base libasound2 alsa-tools

Not installed? install them and restart the system (alsa-base contains necessary ALSA configuration files, libasound2 is the userland interface to the rest of the ALSA functionality which resides in the kernel. restrat to make sure every bit is reloaded).

Is it installed? Are you in the audio group? Is your soundcard connected ;-) ?

I suggest to first get rid of everything that is pulseaudio and jack and start configuring pulse and jack from scratch. I personally don't use them (what for anyway) , I only know ALSA, so in case this is due to pulse or jack, I can't help you.1

Re: [RESOLVED] ALSA disapeared

thanks for the responce Twoion.

after checking "apt-cache policy alsa-base libasound2 alsa-tools" it seems
thhose are installed and, if I'm reading it right, are up to date and corectly prioritized.

xxxxxx:~$ apt-cache policy alsa-base libasound2 alsa-tools
alsa-base:
  Installed: 1.0.25+3~deb7u1
  Candidate: 1.0.25+3~deb7u1
  Version table:
*** 1.0.25+3~deb7u1 0
        500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ wheezy/main amd64 Packages
        500 http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
libasound2:
  Installed: 1.0.25-4
  Candidate: 1.0.25-4
  Version table:
*** 1.0.25-4 0
        500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ wheezy/main amd64 Packages
        500 http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
alsa-tools:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1.0.25-2
  Version table:
     1.0.25-2 0
        500 http://http.debian.net/debian/ wheezy/main amd64 Packages
        500 http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy/main amd64 Packages
xxxxxx:~$

as for being in the audio group it looks like I am;

xxxxx:~$ groups
xxxx cdrom floppy sudo audio dip video plugdev fuse scanner bluetooth netdev cbnetwork
xxxxx:~$

Im going to start purging Pulse and Jack as you sugested. Others have had experience
with a switch from pulseaudio to pure ALSA, I'll be studying their threads.

thanks for pointing me in a direction and helping me get started solving this.

Re: [RESOLVED] ALSA disapeared

Thanks to Twoion I went on a learning trip about the linux sound systems. smile

This was actually due to OSS4-dkms and OSS4-base. some little pakage update pulled them in and they added modules to my Kernel. When I purged Them; my sound, alsa, and jackd came back. I found other things to play with, investigate, and learn along the way too.
(I did erase, and totaly screw up,alsa pulseaudio and jack on one of my OS instances of #! in the proccess, but that's why I keep a spare on my comp, I reinstalled that one and started over with it)
Sorry it took so long to get back to you all about this, but I was having fun.

(amazing how little, seamingly unrelated or off the mark, comments in a discussion will click in somebodies mind and help them solve their probs. Thanks again Twoion)

I've marked this as resolved .... and if anybody has the same prob in the future check for those packages but dont stop looking around for other related things too, you'll have a blast if you let yourself.
